Context:
The tall tower with the distinctive silhouette is the Pellecussen Gate, a private castle that once stood along the River Vecht just outside the city of Utrecht. Van Goyen represented the structure at least twelve times between 1640 and 1655, always placing it in completely imaginary settings.
