Context:
This subtle and intimate river panorama, like all handscrolls, is meant to be read from right to left. Close inspection will lead the viewer from a country villa along twisted paths, over footbridges to eventually focus on serene, mist-shrouded distant mountains.
Most of the motifs, formal conventions and overall aesthetics of this small scroll relate closely to earlier Sung dynasty landscape paintings of the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Not only does it provide a good deal of information about the monochrome ink style of Sung, it is an excellent example of a type of conservative naturalistic painting that persisted into the fourteenth century, a period better known for individual brushwork and abstraction.
