Description:
This Etruscan maiden is shown elaborately dressed in a finely crinkled undergarment called a chiton. A heavier overgarment, a himation, is draped diagonally across her chest. She also wears pointed shoes, a fillet with three rosettes on her head, earrings, and a necklace. She gathers part of her dress with her left hand, while her right arm would have been extended. Her pose and her garments find many parallels in contemporary Greek statues of maidens, known as korai, although her shoes and the considerable use of incised, rather than modeled, articulation are thoroughly Etruscan. Like her Greek counterparts, she would have been offered as a dedication in a sanctuary.
