Context:
Angelo Mannello and Nicola Turturro emigrated from Italy to New York City in the late nineteenth century, establishing themselves as instrument makers. Mannello soon began winning awards at international expositions for his elegant Neapolitan-style mandolins, while Turturro departed from traditional patterns and patented several new models, among them the lyre-mandolin shown here. Both makers later mass-produced instruments for the wholesale trade, but this example, created early in their careers, was designed to represent the highest degree of imaginative craftsmanship.
