Context:

This monumental vase is one of a pair made specifically to flank the entrance to the Fulper Pottery exhibit in 1915 at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, where the pottery were awarded a gold Medal of Honor. Its large size is a technical achievement, both in its graceful proportions and ability to be fired without breaking. Decorated in a lustre glaze, it has subtle streaks that pick up the light and reflect colors ranging from black to bronze to gold. The glaze is a striking example of one of more than a hundred developed under Fulper's art pottery line 'Vasekraft,' introduced in 1909. This vase descended in the Fulper family. |
