Painted in about 1810, during one of the most productive periods in Ingres's career, this portrait represents an important official in Rome during the occupation by Napoleon. The Appian Way and the Colosseum are visible in the background. Ingres, a student of Jacques-Louis David, had won the prix de Rome. While residing in Italy, he portrayed the local elite of the French bureaucracy.
