Context:

The funeral of the hero of the national epic illustrated here is based on a royal Mongol funeral. The variety of the faces and figures of the mourners gives an idea of the rich ethnic mix in Iran during Ilkhanid rule. This Persian painting is one of the first examples that convey a realistic sense of individual emotion.
