Context:

This rare fragment of a Qur'an contains ninety-seven folios copied in bold kufic script. The complete text would have included about 2,300 folios subdivided in many volumes. The illumination seen here originally opened the second volume. Notable are the lifelike trees in the margins that later will be replaced by more abstract vegetal ornament.
