Context:
A large embuutu drum played with the hands, traditionally in a set of four drums called the nankasa (four-tuned). The ensemble playing accompanies a dance called the baakisimba, in which the dancer interprets the rhythm of one of the drums while the other drums provide accents and narrative sequencing. In Ganda society, drums traditionally belonged only to the king and his gift of a drum signaled an official appointment or promotion. Drums and drum ensembles were of different sizes and function. The nankasa ensemble was for social functions.
