Josiah Johnson Hawes began working with Albert Sands Southworth in 1843. Hawes became a full partner of thestudio in 1845 when Southworth's other partner Joseph Pennell died. Hawes married Southworth's sister Nancy, whoworked as a handcolorist for Southworth and Hawes.
