Context:
This rare plaque is thought to be the work of Guillaume Julien, who is recorded as being employed by the French king, Philip the Fair (1285-1314). Julien probably produced the enamels for the Bust Reliquary of St. Louis to which this plaque relates. This reliquary, now only preserved in fragments, was commissioned by Philip in 1306 for the royal chapel of Sainte-Chapelle in Paris.
