Context:
Pop Hart led a nomadic life, supporting himself through the sale of his paintings. During the 1920s, however, he settled near Fort Lee, New Jersey, where he worked as a scene painter for the movie studios. At his best in watercolor, Pop Hart liked to splash pools of color over a hasty pencil sketch, allowing the accidental flow of pigment to become part of the effect. This watercolor of fireworks hovers between a naturalistic scene and an abstract color explosion.
