Context:
Born in Karlsruhe, Hofer settled in Berlin in 1913. His art was one of disillusionment and pessimism, telling his dark vision of modern life through a small range of obsessively recurrent images. In 1933 he was condemned by the Nazis as a 'degenerate artist' and dismissed from his teaching post. In 1943 his studio and most of his work were destroyed by bombing.
