Context:
Corneille de Lyon was court painter to François I, Henry II and Charles IX of France. In this capacity he painted most of the members of the Valois court, recording their personas with delicate and fluent accuracy. The many works in his oeuvre are characterized by their small size, simple blue-green background, and the thin application of paint and glazes. Recent scholarship suggests that the sitter may be either Princess Élizabeth or Marguerite of Valois.Another version of this painting, which most likely predates this work, is in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
