Context:
This tapestry was woven in a Flemish workshop for the Medici family of Florence - a fact that indicates the international importance of Flanders for tapestry production during the 16th century. In Gothic tapestries, millefleurs (floral) designs often serve as a background, but here it is the principal decorative element from which the Mediici coat-of-arms have been incorporated.
