Earl Grosvenor, London (1802, by descent to Dukes of Westminster, London sale 1959); (L. Koetser, London)
Context:
Jan van Goyen painted his landscapes with just a few shades of gray and brown. With these restricted colors, he developed realistic impressions of weather, perspective, and light. Emmerich was a German town just across the Netherlands border. Because it was actually governed by a member of the Dutch royal family, it was a popular spot for travelers.
