Context:
Mabuse traveled to Rome and Florence in 1508. The influence of Italian art can be seen in the solid, almost sculptural feeling of the figures. The frame was also painted by Mabuse and is inscribed in Latin: "Mother, may your contemplation be our reconciliation." The Virgin's pensive gaze indicates her awareness of Christ's future sacrifice. The landscape is probably by another painter, known as the "Master of the Half Length Figures" because his real name is unrecorded.Remarkably, the painting's frame is original and was probably decorated by Gossaert himself.
