Context:
Cogniet wrote on the back of this painting that the letter he is shown reading is the first from him family since his arrival in Rome. As a winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome (Rome Prize), awarded annually by the French Academy, Cogniet received free room and board for five years of intense study and painting in the ancient city. The coveted award guaranteed a successful career within the Paris art establishment. The open window and brilliant sunshine allude to Cogniet's enthusiasm for Italian landscape. The closed door at the left leads to the artist's studio.
