Context:
|
Only months before Anna Dummer Powell (1684-1764) passed away, one of her sons commissioned this portrait to commemorate the 80-year old matriarch and to create an heirloom for future generations. Mrs. Powell was a daughter of Jeremiah Dummer, America's earliest silversmith of renown. Living her entire life in Boston, she married in 1714 and bore at least three children. In the hands of Copley, the city's premier portrait painter during the 1760s, her likeness presents a potent intelligence radiating from a shrunken, frail body. Such details as the thumb and glasses inserted into the book to mark her place inject a sense of transience to this enduring image. The painting had been passed down from the sitter through a continuous line of female descendents until shortly before it was given to the museum. The frame is original.
