Context:
In Dante's 14th-century epic poem The Divine Comedy, Dante and the ancient Roman poet Virgil visit Hell where they encounter the souls of Paolo and Francesca in the murky darkness. Francesca da Rimini had been in love with Paolo, but was forced for political reasons to marry his deformed brother. Francesca and Paolo were later caught in each others arms and were slain by Francesca's husband.Scheffer painted several versions of this popular composition, which was first shown at the Paris Salon in 1835.
