Embroidery from a Cloud Collar: Ocean, Rocks, and PeoniesNeedleloop embroidery; silk and silver thread, silvered paperChina, 1300s, Yuan to early Ming Dynasty (1279-1424)The Cleveland Museum of Art, Purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund 1993.10(Cat. no. 55)Two themes have been combined in this embroidery. The tree peony and rocksresemble Chinese paintings of plants growing among rocks that wereassociated with gardens. Here, however, the rocks emerge directly from thesea, resembling the Taoist Islands of theImmortals in the Eastern Ocean. In the background are Buddhist and Taoist symbols.Judging from the bracketed border in the lower portion, the embroiderypreserves most of one lobe of a cloud-collar medallion. Each of the threeother lobes would have been embroidered with the same design.Although fragmentary, this textile is an outstanding example of needleloopembroidery. Especially fine is the intricacy of the diaper patterns of tinyholes through which the silvered paper beneath sparkles.
