Context:
Richly decorated, this tilt-top table is also rich in history. Along with many other works of art, it once graced the home of William J. Gordon (1818-1892), probably best known for his bequest to the city of Cleveland of Gordon Park, where his house once stood. A description of Gordon's home and its grounds in the 1892 Atlas of Cuyahoga County and City of Cleveland, describes his seemingly humble home: 'If we enter the house, outside an unpretending little structure, originally the home of a laborer, we shall find still a series of surprises. It is a miracle of refinement and luxury. Here are costly marbles from Rome, mosaics from Florence, works of art from Sevres and Limoge (sic), gems in bronzes, pictures, books, and all the charming things to adorn an ideal home.'Gordon, a philanthropist and one of Cleveland's leading businessmen during the late 19th century, was a classic example of a 'self-made man.' Orphaned at age twelve, he moved from Monmouth County, New Jersey, to New York City, where he was trained in the grocery business. Arriving in Cleveland in 1837, he ran his own successful wholesale grocery for nearly 20 years before moving on to make his fortune in the fledgling iron industry.
