Context:
In Korea, beginning in the late Koryo period (918--1392), Confucianism supplanted Buddhism. Indeed the Choson dynasty (1392--1910) was founded upon Confucian principles. Confucianism emphasizes filial piety, and mortuary rituals are included among the rites of major importance, especially within a family. These three pieces of furniture comprise the central elements of a Confucian memorial altar used in a home for ancestral worship. The dated epitaph plaques chronicle the background and life history of an individual in later Choson society.
