Context:
First as a military commander and then as a Buddhist priest, Xugu became a pivotal figure in Shanghai's art scene. He and a host of artists active in the newly rising metropolis turned their attention from land-scape to plants and figures, pursuing a forceful and inventive approach rather than the traditional emphasis on subtlety and understatement.Loquat trees appear frequently in Xugu's later works. A symbol of wealth and prosperity because of the plenitude of fruits on each tree, the loquat had obvious appeal to a broad range of clients, particularly the rising merchant class in cities like Shanghai. Here Xugu's juxtaposition of ripe and raw green fruits, his bold brushwork, and his strong sense of composition are very much evident. The repeated broad curves of the tree branches serve as a basic structural scaffold-a method that parallels those used by modern artists in the West (such as Piet Mondrian, during his early career).
