Context:
These two very elaborate Etruscan earrings are called 'little bag' ('a bauletto') in Italian to describe their cylindrical shape. Attached to one end of each gold cylinder is a large rose made of filigree wire and sheet gold. A series of compartments formed by plaits and ribbons ornaments the cylinders' surface. Each is filled with filigree rosettes or a granulated boss. The granulation, formed by the adhesion of tiny gold globules to the gold base, is exceptionally fine in both pieces. Originally the earrings would have been suspended on hooks, now missing. Such pieces are among the most intricate creations of ancient goldsmiths.'Dallas Museum of Art: A Guide to the Collection,' page 28
