Subject Description:
Here Kuzunoha is shown dressed for the journey, with a walking cane and black lacquer travelling hat in her hand. This is the typical costume for a 'travel scene' (michiyuki) in Kabuki, which required of the actor a display of mimetic dancing (shosagoto). The overkimono is decorated with a design of autumn grasses, bush clover, and the clappers used to scare birds away from crops; one sleeve has been slipped off to reveal the pink kimono of sacred-jewel pattern beneath. The black obi, tied behind, has a figured design overprinted in mica, and is complemented by an additional bright scarlet sash hanging down in front. (The Actor's Image, 1994)
