Subject Description:
Arashi Ryuzo II normally played evil male characters (jitsu aku), but here he appears in one of his rare female roles, as Hachijo, wet nurse of the dictator Taira no Kiyomori (1118-1181), in the historical play Gempei Hashira-goyomi, performed at the Kiri Theater in the eleventh month of 1795. Hachijo's grim expression suggests that this was also an evil role. Her brow is furrowed, there are dark circles under her deep-set eyes, and she stands with her hands splayed tensely in front of her, one arm withdrawn from her bright orange kimono to reveal a somber gray robe beneath. Behind her stands a large wicker basket, and the background consists of hanging reed blinds and sliding doors decorated with the 'ring and chrysanthemum' (kangiku) crest of the actorSawamura Sojuro III.Ryuzo II's pose, facing out of the composition to the right, strongly suggests that this is a multisheet print.
