Subject Description:
Sukegoro II as a ninja, or shadow warrior (a spy, sometimes an assassin, typically dressed in black), a role he played opposite Danjuro IV as Kisanda. An actor critique describes the scene:'. . . next he [Sukegoro] came on as Aso no Matsuwaka. Overhearing Kisanda reciting the Tiger Scroll, [Sukegoro] made the nine magic signs in the air and cast a spell. With a clap of thunder he caused Kisanda to fall unconscious, stole the scroll, and handed it over to Osada. . . .' Shunsho's powerful design surely captures the moment when the triumphant Matsuwaka sloughs off the shadow warrior's black disguise to reveal his true identity. With one clenched hand thrust rigidly downward, legs straight, and heels held close together (this positioning of the legs being known as soku mie), he poses with the stolen scroll held between his teeth, bulging eyes glaring defiantly. ('The Actor's Image', 1994)
