Subject Description:
In the opening (third) act, at the order of evil Prince Ikazuchi, his henchman Shinagawa Okaminosuke (played by Otani Hiroemon III, right) is about to cast down a stone basin planted with peonies. Because peonies were regarded as the 'King of Flowers,' this gesture symbolizes Ikazuchi's machinations to seize power in the realm. Entering via the hanamichi walkway, Ichikawa Danjuro V in the role of the hero Arashishi Otokonosuke, dressed in the extravagant costume of the 'Shibaraku' (Stop right there!) role (left), reaches the stage in time to effect what must be one of the oddest rescues in Kabuki- the saving of the peonies. ('The Actor's Image', 1994)
