Context:
Near Newport is one of John Frederick Kensett's late depictions of the New England coast. Small in scale, luminous with light, and meticulously detailed, the painting stretches a limitless sea before us and carefully documents the configuration of the Rhode Island coast. Kensett first visited the Newport area around 1854, returned there numerous times during the course of his career, and devoted many canvases to its scenic beauty. The artist's many depictions of the seaside reflect his stylistic development, moving from a mode largely indebted to Old Master painters and early Hudson River landscape painters to one akin to seventeenth-century Dutch marine painting.
