Context:
Swiftly jotted down first ideas for major compositions are rarely found in Watteau's oeuvre. No finer example has survived than this sketch for the painting "The Feast of Love", which is in Dresden. The basic elements of the composition are the same, but modifications were made in the painting--in particular, the bucolic behavior of some of the couples was elevated to a more elegant social plane.
