Context:
The name "Lagneau" is associated with several large groups of early French portrait drawings, but almost nothing is known about the artist himself. The portraits, which include ethnic and genre types, have been associated with the court of Lorraine and the realism of the young Georges de la Tour. The treatment of the old man's face here is strongly naturalistic, but, despite its anonymity, not without dignity.
