Context:
The son of an architect for the city of Paris, Gustave Moreau found his first artistic mentor in 1848 in Théodore Chassériau. Through Chassériau he learned an appreciation for the linear refinement of the drawings of Ingres and the coloristic brilliance and exoticism of the paintings of Delacroix. These influences are especially apparent in this early drawing of Moreau's friend, the composer Eugène Lacheurie.
