Fan painting; ink on gold-flecked paper
The scene depicts the mountainous countryside of Mount Langye in northeast Anhui province, a site well-known in Chinese literary history. The fan is painted in the early Qing Orthodox School style, and is meticulously detailed. An inscription in standardscript by Dong Bangda recounts some of the history of the place. From the artist's signature ('Respectfully painted by Dong Bangda') it is clear that the fan was painted for the emperor, and may have been given away as a gift. (S.Little, 1999)
