Context:
This chair is known as a "Greek" chair because the legs were similar to those on Greek thrones and stools, which Godwin sketched from the Elgin marbles in the British Museum. The design is extremely forward-looking for its time. The lack of superficial ornament, airy, see-through elements, and overall angularity was an inspiration to the modern design movement. The chair's slanted back provides a dramatic visual continuum from Godwin to Frank Lloyd Wright's slanted-back chair, seen nearby.
