The magi pictured here was originally part of a larger tapestry made in Flanders about the beginning of the sixteenth century. It is probable that at some point the tapestry was damaged and in order to retain at least some of the original weaving, the magi was incorporated into the present millefleur background. The elaborate red surcoat is original, but the blue under robe was created when the tapestry took its present form. |
