This lyrical oil drawing owes much to Modigliani's brief occupation as a sculptor. In the early 1910s, after several years as a struggling painter in Paris, Modigliani turned to creating monolithic limestone heads and figures characterized by elongated, archaic features. By 1915 he had returned to painting, but not after incorporating a distinct sculptural sense of volume and movement in his nudes and portrait heads. In this direct and pensive red nude, Modigliani borrows from the formal languages of Cubism and Fauvism to produce an image of striking originality. |
