Context: According to the artist's son, Pierre Matisse, this canvas was painted in the summer of 1917 on the road to Villacoublay, a semi-military airport just outside of Paris. Around 5:00 in the evening, Pierre was chauffeuring his father in an old Renault when the elder Matisse hit upon the idea of painting a view of the road from inside the car. The affair proved more difficult than anticipated. Buses and cars zooming to and from the airport forced the artist to paint with the windows closed, and vibrations from the traffic constantly rocked the Renault back and forth on its well-worn springs. Despite these inconveniences, Matisse produced a charming and novel picture referring to life in the modern automobile age.
