Context: Paicasso painted Harlequin with Violin ("Si tu veux") in the style known as synthetic Cubism, in which lively colors and large, geometric shapes were used to depict recognizable subjects. Here, the violin and sheet music provide hints of the picture's meaning. The diamond-patterned costume and the dark, triangular hat identify the musician as Harlequin, a jokester and character for the popular theater known as the Commeida dell' arte. For many years Picasso depicted himself as Harlequin, yet the musician in this painting also wears the mask and white hat associated with the melancholy Pierrot, another character in the Commedia. Perhaps the most revealing clue to the painting's meaning is the phrase "Si tu veux," written at the top of the sheet of music, and referring to a popular song that begins: "Si tu veux, Marguerite, faire mon bonheur, donne-moi ton coeur" (If you like, Marguerite, make me happy, give me your heart.) This may have been intended as a loving joke to the Russian ballet dancer, Olga Koklova, who Picasso married in 1918.
