Provenance: said to have been the long-standing property of a family near Dijon prior to its acquisition; (Ellin Mitchell Works of Art, New York).
Context: This sculpture was probably meant to stand in a Burgundian church. The figure of the Christ Child originally held by the Virgin was removed by vandals during the French Revolution (about 1790).
