Context: This portrait typifies painting in Vienna between 1815 and 1865, an era known as the Biedermeier period. The mountains in the background represent both a devotion to nature as well as the patriotic cult of the Austrian homeland. The sitter was a prestigious member of the aristocracy. Crescentia Seilern (1799-1875), countess in her own right, married Károly Zichy in 1812; she later became the wife of the Hungarian patriot István Széchenyi.
