Context: The Nupe, an Islamic people of northern Nigeria, are known for both pottery and metalwork embellished with intricate, non-representational patterning. Coil-built by a female potter, this large, gracefully shaped pitcher was dried to a leather-hard stage, then decorated by scoring, incising and burnishing the exterior. Finally, the vessel was fired in the open air.
