Workshop of the Convent of St. Agnes(?) (Northern Netherlands, Delft)

Leaf from a Book of Hours:

Angel with a Banderole (Prayer to the Holy Trinity), about 1475

Ink, tempera, and gold on vellum

The Collection of Jeanne Miles Blackburn CMA 1999.133

[Cat. no. 55]

This leaf illustrates the highpoint of the penmanship for which Delft manuscripts were famous. The red and blue penwork flourishes filling the margins of the page belong to what Dutch scholars call the "block group," in which the borders comprise a number of formal geometric compartments, each tightly filled with contrasting penwork. This form of decoration appears to be unique to books of hours and breviaries produced in Delft. An additional feature of this group of manu-scripts is the use of borders containing figures with banderoles. These generally relate to the subjects of the texts or main miniatures.

Related to the Masters of the Zwolle Bible (Northern Netherlands, Zwolle[?])
