Context:

John Wilson, an African-American artist from Boston, studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, assisted in the establishment of the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists, and taught at Boston University for more than 20 years. Wilson has worked primarily as a draftsman and sculptor. His most important commission was a bust of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for the United States Capitol (1986).

Wilson's strong interest in the human condition and his extraordinary feeling for dark tonalities and sculptural effects are revealed in figural images of African-American life. Parents and children portrayed in loving, protective poses suggesting universal values are a recurring theme. The oversized hands and the large-scale, solidly modeled, yet slightly abstracted figure of the woman in Mother and Child reveal Wilson's training with the Parisian modernist painter Fernand Léger in the 1940s. Also evident is the impact of Wilson's experience in the early 1950s during a fellowship in Mexico City, where he was attracted to the powerful imagery of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.
