Context: Four artists collaborated on this canvas, each contributing a small representation of one of the seasons. The painting celebrates the election of the actor Edmont Got (1822-1901) to membership in the Comédie Française, the state theater of France. At the time, the four painters were living together in an artist's commune in Paris.
