Context: The Longquan kilns are noted for their thick, gray-bodied ceramics covered with a glassy, dense, olive-green glaze. Production of Longquan wares began in the 12th century and continued into the 15th. Mainly used domestically, Longquan wares were also exported in large numbers to Southeast Asia, Korea, and Japan. The thick body and stylized decoration of this Ming-period (1368-1644) platter are typical of later Longquan ware. The large size of the platter indicates that it was made for export, probably to Southeast Asia, Iran, or Turkey. Such large platters were in demand in those parts of the world as food servers.
