Context: Most ancient Egyptian relief sculpture was plastered over and brilliantly painted; examples in which so much of the original decoration has survived, as here, are extremely rare. The figures in the lower register represent four of the nomes, or provinces, of Egypt--identified by the emblems on their heads--walking in procession toward the god of the temple. Their well-fed bodies symbolize the agricultural wealth of the country, attested to by the immense piles of offerings that they bear in their hands. The first figure on your right says, "King Nebmaatre [Amenhotep III] has come to you bringing to you every good thing that is in this land. May you grant him all life, stability, and dominion," "the revenue of the two lands [Upper and Lower Egypt]," and "all offerings and provisions." Enough remains of the upper register to indicate that the figure of the god (on the right) was representing "hundreds of thousands of years." It has been suggested that these blocks came from Amenhotep III's mortuary temple complex in western Thebes.
