Context: This lovely image of a mother-goddess with a child formed part of a popular Hindu iconography of the seven mothers (Saptamatrka). It came originally from a group in the village of Tanesara-Mahadeva, in the vicinity of Udaipur. Two other well-known sculptures from the same set are in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The voluptuous goddess holds the child standing at her side by the hand, trying to restrain his playful mood. The semismiling expression on her face indicates her affection for the child. Her grace, easy relaxed posture, and the "psychological" connection between the figures classify it as one of the most compelling representations of mother and a child in Indian art. She could compete very successfully with the best representations of Christian Madonnas. In fact, this parallel seems particularly appropriate, considering the style of the sculpture, which was under strong Western influence. The village of Tanesara in Rajasthan is geographically not too far removed from the Gandhara region, nor is the time of the sculpture's execution. Thus, the intermingling of Gandharan and Gupta influences is responsible for this unusually naturalistic depiction of the subject matter. While the mother goddess cult can be traced back as far as the Indus Valley civilization, in later periods the Saptamatrka are represented as the consorts (®akti) of various Hindu gods. In the instance of the Tanesara-Mahadeva set, however, there are no attributes or vehicles (vahana) that would allow specific identification. Consequently, they are sometimes simply referred to as the mothers of the god Skanda (Skandamata). S.C.
