Context: A single tomb might contain hundreds of stone vessels replicating the shapes of pottery vessels used in everyday life. Prospectors and quarrymen traveled far in search of the desired materials. Hornblende diorite, a hard stone notable for its mottled texture, was found in the eastern desert, along the route to the Red Sea. Anorthosite gneiss, which is even harder, was quarried in the Nubian desert, southwest of Egypt.
