Context: Pottery, modeled and painted by women, is one of the Shipibo people's most important art forms. The bold red and black patterning of this vessel's shoulder forms an effective contrast to the delicate, linear decoration of the neck. According to tradition, shipibo design originates in the skin patterns of the Great World Boa and embody beauty and harmony. Large, ornate vessels of this kind were used to hold native beer for festive occasions.
